Restart Your Macintosh

Upon reboot, you should see the MkLinux "splash screen". It is set to default boot into Mac OS. Click on the "MkLinux" button, and the MkLinux installer should run.

Splash screen boot options

a — Pressing the 'a' key at the splash screen provides you the chance to select an alternate set of files for booting the server. If you have more than one vmlinux server in your /mach_servers folder (a common occurance when upgrading the system) then you may use this option to specify which server to start.
s — Pressing the 's' key at the splash screen will boot the system into "single user" mode. This is frequently useful for performing system maintenance on damaged or misconfigured systems.
q — Pressing the 'q' key will force the machine to boot into the secondary OS. If your default boot system is MkLinux, then pressing 'q' will boot the machine into the MacOS. If the MacOS is your default boot OS, then pressing 'q' will launch MkLinux.
Pressing the return key or the space bar will launch the default OS.

Setting the default bootos

The MkLinux booter allows you to configure which OS (Macintosh or MkLinux) you wish to be your default operating system. This option can be set in one of two ways. The MkLinux control panel installed in your Macintosh System Folder provides a simple, graphical interface for selecting the default operating system. Or you may simply edit the file MkLinux.prefs in your System Folder to set the variable

bootos=mklinux

to make MkLinux the default OS. The option "macos" sets the machine to boot into the MacOS as the default.

When the splash screen is first presented, you will notice a count down clock in the lower right side of the window. This counts down the number of seconds until the default operating system is launched. This bootdelay is set to 20 seconds by default. You may lengthen, or shorten this delay by editing the MkLinux.prefs file. In order to set a boot delay of two minutes, add the line

bootdelay=120

to the MkLinux.prefs file in your Preferences folder using a text editor such as SimpleText.
